Makar Sankranti Gifts
Makar Sankranti marks the sun's move into Capricorn and the start of longer days. It is celebrated as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Lohri in Punjab, Bihu in Assam and Uttarayan in Gujarat, and the gifts that suit each differ.
What to send
Tilgul, sesame and jaggery sweets, are the traditional exchange, given with the phrase asking that you speak sweetly. Chikki, gajak and til laddoos travel well and keep for weeks. Dry fruit boxes and sweet hampers suit households you do not know well.
Timing your order
Sankranti falls on 14 or 15 January. Order three to four days ahead, as courier volumes rise sharply through the second week of January. Same-day delivery is available in many cities but the choice narrows close to the date.
